Today, 10 October 2026, marks Day 1 of the annual Nine Emperor Gods Festival in Penang.

For the next nine days, from 10 to 18 October 2026, temples across Penang will become busier with prayers, yellow flags, vegetarian food stalls and traditional ceremonies. The festival follows the 1st to the 9th day of the ninth lunar month.

If you are visiting Penang this October, this is a very different side of the island to experience — not simply as a tourist attraction, but as a tradition that local families and temples have continued for generations.

Nine Emperor Gods Festival 2026 Dates

📅 10 – 18 October 2026🗓️ 1st – 9th day of the ninth lunar month

Although today is officially the first day, some temples began their welcoming ceremonies last night, 9 October, before the start of the nine-day celebration.

The final night, 18 October, is one of the most important moments of the festival, when the Nine Emperor Gods are ceremonially sent back to sea.

Why Is There So Much Vegetarian Food in Penang?

One of the easiest ways to know that the Nine Emperor Gods Festival has arrived is to look around Penang.

Suddenly, you will start seeing yellow flags and yellow signboards outside roadside stalls, coffee shops and restaurants.

For many devotees, eating vegetarian food is part of spiritual purification during the festival. Some choose to observe it for 1 day, 3 days, 7 days or the full 9 days, depending on their personal vow, family practice and tradition.

During these nine days, vegetarian food becomes especially easy to find around Penang. The official Penang tourism guide notes that temporary street stalls marked with yellow flags appear across the state during the festival, serving plant-based versions of familiar local dishes.

You may find vegetarian noodles, curry, rice, fried bee hoon, snacks, traditional cakes and even meat-free versions of familiar Malaysian dishes.

For visitors, this is part of the experience.

You do not have to participate in the religious ceremonies to appreciate the festival. Simply walking around Penang and trying some of the vegetarian food already gives you a glimpse of how the city changes during these nine days.

One example this year is Pure Lotus Cafeteria along Jalan Utama, which is holding a vegetarian food fair from 10 to 18 October, 8am to 3pm, in conjunction with the festival.

Tow Boo Kong Temple, Butterworth

📍 Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth

One of the best-known places to experience the Nine Emperor Gods Festival in Penang is Tow Boo Kong Temple in Butterworth.

The temple began from a modest shrine in the early 1970s and later developed into one of Butterworth's major Nine Emperor Gods temples.

During the 2026 celebration, the temple is also preparing vegetarian lunch and dinner for devotees.

Two important dates to remember are:

⭐ 17 October 2026At midnight, the temple will celebrate the birthday of Dou Mu.

🌊 18 October 2026On the final night, devotees will bid farewell to the Nine Emperor Gods. Prayer messages placed on the ceremonial Emperor Boat will be taken out to sea during the send-off.

If you want to experience the festival at its liveliest, the final few evenings in Butterworth are especially worth considering.

Nine Emperor Gods Festival on Penang Island

You do not need to cross to Butterworth to experience the festival.

Several temples on Penang Island also have long connections with the Nine Emperor Gods tradition.

Tow Boe Keong Kew Ong Tai Tay Temple

📍 1, Lintang Macallum 2, George Town

This is one of the well-established Nine Emperor Gods temples in George Town.

Official religious-site records identify the temple as being dedicated to the Nine Emperor Gods, and its history traces the worship tradition in the Macallum Street area back to a time when temporary altars were set up during the ninth lunar month.

During the festival period, the area becomes much busier with devotees, prayers and traditional celebrations.

Hong Kong Street Tow Boh Keong

Another interesting place is Hong Kong Street Tow Boh Keong in George Town.

Its Nine Emperor Gods tradition stretches back more than two centuries. Historical records associated with the temple include a handwritten Nine Emperor scripture dated 1821, making it an important part of Penang's Nine Emperor Gods heritage.

For visitors interested in Penang history and Chinese culture, this is one of the places that shows how deeply the tradition is connected with George Town.

What Is Penang Like During These Nine Days?

The atmosphere changes noticeably.

Yellow flags appear along the roads. Vegetarian stalls become busier. Devotees dressed mainly in white visit temples to pray, while larger ceremonies and processions usually attract crowds at night.

The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is not simply a performance organised for tourists.

It remains an active religious celebration, so visitors should be respectful when entering temples or watching ceremonies. Avoid blocking worshippers, dress appropriately and follow any photography restrictions given by the temple.

If you are mainly interested in the atmosphere and vegetarian food, evening is usually a good time to explore.

Day 1

10 October 2026

Today is only the beginning.

From now until 18 October, Penang will gradually become livelier as the festival moves towards its final days.

If you see a roadside stall with a yellow banner during your Penang trip, stop and have a look.

Try a vegetarian meal.

Visit one of the temples.

Walk through the neighbourhood in the evening.

Sometimes the most memorable part of travelling in Penang is not another famous attraction. It is arriving at the right time and seeing how local people continue traditions that have been part of Penang for generations.

That is what makes the Nine Emperor Gods Festival in Penang worth experiencing. ❤️
