Cheong Fatt Tze Blue Mansion Penang: History, Ticket Price & Visiting Guide
When people think about George Town, Penang, colourful shophouses, street art and old colonial buildings usually come to mind. But hidden along Leith Street is one building that immediately stands apart from everything around it.
Its deep indigo-blue walls have made it one of the most photographed heritage buildings in Penang.
This is Cheong Fatt Tze – The Blue Mansion, better known locally as the Blue Mansion Penang or Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion.
It is beautiful from the outside, but there is much more to this place than its famous blue walls.
Behind them is the story of one of the most influential Chinese businessmen of his generation, an extraordinary combination of Eastern and Western architecture, and a restoration project that helped preserve an important part of Penang's history.
Who Was Cheong Fatt Tze?
Cheong Fatt Tze was born in Guangdong, China, in 1840. He left China as a young man and eventually built a large business empire across Southeast Asia.
His interests included trading, shipping, agriculture, banking and other businesses, and his success earned him the nickname "Rockefeller of the East."
Penang became an important base for Cheong Fatt Tze, and towards the end of the 19th century, he built this remarkable mansion in George Town.
The building was not simply an expensive family home.
It also became an important centre for his business activities and, for a period, housed the Chinese Vice-Consulate.
Today, walking through the mansion gives visitors a small glimpse into the life of a wealthy Chinese merchant family in Penang more than a century ago.
Why Is the Blue Mansion So Special?
The first thing everyone notices is, of course, the colour.
The mansion's distinctive indigo-blue exterior makes it instantly recognisable, but the architecture inside is even more interesting.
At a time when Western-influenced architecture was becoming increasingly common in Penang, Cheong Fatt Tze chose to build his mansion around a traditional Chinese courtyard design.
But he didn't completely reject Western influences.
Instead, the mansion became a fascinating combination of both worlds.
Walk through the building and you'll find traditional Chinese timber carvings, Cantonese latticework and detailed porcelain decorations alongside Scottish cast-iron columns and beautiful Art Nouveau stained glass.
The scale of the mansion is impressive too.
It contains 38 rooms, five courtyards, seven staircases and approximately 220 windows.
Yet it doesn't feel like a huge European palace.
The courtyards allow natural light and ventilation into the building, while the layout reflects traditional Chinese architectural principles and beliefs.
It is one of those places where you should slow down.
Look upwards. Look through the windows. Look at the tiles, carvings and stained glass.
The small details are what make the Blue Mansion special.
From Grand Mansion to Near Ruin
The building visitors see today almost didn't survive in this condition.
After Cheong Fatt Tze died in 1916, the mansion remained in his family for decades, but its condition gradually deteriorated.
Over the years, rooms were divided and rented to different families. Maintenance became increasingly difficult, and this once-grand residence slowly fell into disrepair.
By the late 20th century, the mansion needed serious conservation work.
After Cheong Fatt Tze's last son died, the property was eventually acquired by a group of conservationists who recognised its historical importance.
Instead of modernising everything and making the building look new, the restoration focused on preserving its original character.
Traditional materials and techniques were used wherever possible.
It was painstaking work, but it saved one of George Town's most important historic homes.
The restoration was recognised internationally when the project received the Most Excellent Project Award at the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation in 2000.
Today, the mansion operates as both a heritage boutique hotel and a place visitors can explore through organised tours.
Blue Mansion Penang Ticket Price
You don't need to stay at the hotel to see inside the mansion.
Visitors can join the Guided Mansion Tour.
Current admission prices are:

The guided tour takes approximately 45 minutes.
Guided tours are currently held daily at:
11:00 AM3:30 PM
Tour capacity is limited, so booking ahead is recommended, particularly during weekends, school holidays and peak travel periods.
Visitors who prefer exploring independently can also choose a self-guided audio tour, with entry available from approximately 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily.

You can combine the Blue Mansion with other nearby attractions such as Armenian Street, Penang Street Art, Little India, the Esplanade, Fort Cornwallis, Clan Jetties and the historic streets of the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You don't necessarily need an entire day for the mansion itself.
But give yourself enough time to enjoy it.
Rushing in, taking a photo and leaving means missing most of what makes this building interesting.

Inside, you begin to understand how wealthy families lived in George Town more than a century ago and how Chinese traditions mixed with European influences as Penang developed into an important trading port.
