New Direct Flights to Penang in 2026: Haikou and Batam Make Penang Easier to Reach

Penang is becoming easier to reach from more cities around Asia.

In October 2026 alone, Penang International Airport is welcoming two important new direct connections — one from Haikou, China, and another from Batam, Indonesia.

For travellers, this means less time changing flights in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore and more time enjoying Penang itself.

From George Town’s UNESCO heritage streets and Penang Hill to local hawker food, temples, beaches and family attractions, getting to Penang directly is becoming much more convenient.

Haikou to Penang Direct Flight Started on 11 October 2026

Hainan Airlines officially launched its new Haikou – Penang direct flight on 11 October 2026.

The inaugural flight HU477 departed from Haikou Meilan International Airport and arrived at Penang International Airport on the same evening. The service operates twice a week, every Wednesday and Sunday.

The route connects:

📍 Haikou Meilan International Airport✈️ Hainan Airlines📍 Penang International Airport

For the inaugural schedule, flight HU477 departed Haikou at 5:30pm and arrived in Penang at 8:45pm. The return flight HU478 departed Penang at 9:45pm and arrived in Haikou at 1:00am the following day. Flight timings can change by travel date, so passengers should always check the latest airline schedule before booking.

Haikou is now the ninth Chinese city with a scheduled direct air connection to Penang.

Penang already has direct links with major Chinese destinations including Guangzhou, Xiamen, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Qingdao, as well as Hong Kong.

This is another important step for Penang tourism, especially as more Chinese travellers look for direct access to destinations outside Kuala Lumpur.

Penang Has Added More China Flights in 2026

The Haikou route is not the only new China connection added this year.

Spring Airlines launched a new Shanghai – Penang daily service on 30 January 2026, followed by a Guangzhou – Penang service on 1 February 2026 operating three times weekly.

A new Qingdao – Penang direct route also began on 31 March 2026, operating three times a week.

All of these routes strengthen Penang International Airport as a direct gateway for visitors who want to travel straight to northern Malaysia.

For Penang, this is especially useful because many international visitors come specifically for food, heritage, medical travel, business and short holidays.

Penang to Batam Direct Flight Starts on 18 October 2026

Another new route is arriving just one week after the Haikou launch.

Batik Air is scheduled to begin its new Penang – Batam direct flight on 18 October 2026.

The service will operate three times a week and will be the first scheduled direct flight connecting Penang with Batam.

Batam is located in Indonesia’s Riau Islands, close to Singapore, and is an important centre for tourism, industry and business.

The direct flight gives travellers from Batam and the surrounding Riau Islands a much easier way to reach Penang without having to make an additional connection.

It also gives travellers from Penang and northern Malaysia a convenient new option for visiting Batam.

Once the route begins, Batam will become another important Indonesian market connected directly with Penang.

Why More Direct Flights Matter for Penang

For visitors, the biggest advantage is simple: convenience.

Someone flying directly into Penang International Airport can land and begin their Penang trip immediately.

There is no need to fly into Kuala Lumpur first, wait for another domestic flight, or spend several extra hours travelling overland.

That makes Penang more attractive for shorter holidays too.

A visitor can arrive, check into a hotel in George Town or Batu Ferringhi, enjoy local food that evening, and start exploring the island the following morning.

Direct flights are also useful for families, elderly travellers, business visitors and medical tourists who prefer a simpler journey.

Penang International Airport itself has continued to see strong passenger growth. Malaysia Airports reported that Penang handled 741,183 passengers in January 2026, a 3.8% increase from the same month a year earlier.

What to Do After You Arrive in Penang

Once you land at Penang International Airport, most of Penang’s major attractions can easily be combined into a private itinerary.

You might spend a day exploring the heritage streets of George Town, including Armenian Street, Chew Jetty, the Esplanade and the Blue Mansion.

Another day can be spent visiting Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si Temple, followed by local food around Air Itam.

If you prefer a slower day, head towards Batu Ferringhi, the Floating Mosque, Teluk Bahang and the western side of Penang Island.

And of course, food is part of almost every Penang trip.

Char Koay Teow, Assam Laksa, Hokkien Mee, Curry Mee, Nasi Kandar and Ais Kacang are all worth making time for.

Penang is not a city that needs to be rushed.

With more direct flights arriving, it is becoming easier to simply land, take your time and discover the island properly.
