Penang is famous for Char Koay Teow, Assam Laksa, Nasi Kandar and Hokkien Mee, but after walking around George Town under the afternoon sun, sometimes what you really want is something cold.

That is when a bowl of Penang Ais Kacang feels just right. 🍧

Known locally as Ais Kacang, ABC or simply red bean ice, this colourful shaved-ice dessert has been part of Malaysian street-food culture for generations. It is sweet, cold, colourful and filled with different textures — exactly the kind of dessert that works perfectly with Penang’s warm weather.

What Is Penang Ais Kacang?

“Ais Kacang” literally means “bean ice”.

A traditional bowl usually starts with red beans, sweet corn, grass jelly and attap chee, topped with a mountain of finely shaved ice.

Rose syrup is poured over the ice, followed by evaporated milk or coconut milk.

And if you want something even more satisfying, many stalls will add a scoop of ice cream on top. 🍨

Every stall has its own version.

Some are sweeter, some use more milk, some give you more red beans, while others are known for their ice cream or special syrup.

That is part of the fun of eating Ais Kacang in Penang.

The Best Part? Mix Everything Together

When the bowl first arrives, it usually looks very colourful.

You see the shaved ice covered with syrup and milk, sometimes with a scoop of ice cream sitting right on top.

But don’t just eat the ice from the top.

Dig down.

Underneath are the red beans, corn, jelly and attap chee.

After a few spoonfuls, everything starts mixing together.

The ice melts slightly, the ice cream becomes creamy, the syrup reaches the bottom, and suddenly every spoonful has a little bit of everything.

Sweet, creamy, chewy and icy — all in one bowl.

For many locals, this is simply the taste of an old-fashioned Penang afternoon.

Ais Kacang Has a Long History in Penang

One of the best-known names connected with Penang Ais Kacang is Swatow Lane Ice Kacang.

Its story can be traced back to 1923, when Lee Kar Tee started selling hand-shaved ice balls with syrup from a small roadside stall along Swatow Lane in George Town.

The ice was shaved manually, packed into balls by hand and drizzled with syrup.

Over the years, more ingredients were added, the dessert became more colourful, and it slowly developed into the Ais Kacang we recognise today.

Later generations continued the business, making it part of Penang’s street-food history.

That is one reason Ais Kacang is more than just a cold dessert.

It is also part of the story of Penang’s old hawker culture.

Where Can You Find Ais Kacang in Penang?

You do not have to search very far.

Ais Kacang can be found at many hawker centres and local food courts around Penang.

Well-known areas for this dessert include Gurney Drive, New World Park, Padang Brown and the Esplanade area.

Opening days and hours can change, so it is always better to check before making a special trip.

Sometimes you do not need to search for the “best” one.

Just find a busy local stall, order a bowl and enjoy it slowly.

Ais Kacang With Ice Cream

If you like desserts, go for the version with ice cream.

A scoop of ice cream changes the whole bowl.

As it slowly melts into the shaved ice, syrup and milk, the dessert becomes creamier and richer.

Vanilla is a common choice, but different stalls may offer different flavours.

It is especially good after a spicy Penang meal.

Imagine finishing a plate of Char Koay Teow or a bowl of Curry Mee, then ending your meal with cold red bean ice and ice cream.

Simple, but very satisfying.

More Than Just Red Beans

Despite the name “red bean ice”, Ais Kacang is really about the combination of ingredients.

You might find red beans at the bottom, sweet corn beside them, chewy grass jelly, translucent attap chee and plenty of syrup soaking through the shaved ice.

That mixture of textures is what makes it different from ordinary ice cream.

You are not eating the same thing in every spoonful.

Sometimes you get beans.

Sometimes corn.

Sometimes jelly.

And sometimes a big spoonful of melting ice cream. 🍧

A Must-Try Penang Dessert

When people talk about Penang food, most visitors immediately think about Char Koay Teow, Assam Laksa, Hokkien Mee, Curry Mee or Nasi Kandar.

They should.

But Penang desserts deserve some attention too.

If you are spending a day exploring George Town, Chew Jetty, Armenian Street, Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si Temple or Gurney Drive, save some space after lunch.

Find a hawker centre.

Sit down.

Order a bowl of Penang Ais Kacang.

On a hot afternoon, you will understand why this simple dessert has remained popular for so many years.

Sometimes the food you remember most from a trip is not the expensive meal.

It is a colourful bowl of shaved ice, red beans and ice cream that you ate while taking a break from exploring Penang. ❤️
