Today, 18 October 2026, marks the ninth and final day of the annual Penang Nine Emperor Gods Festival.

The nine-day celebration began on 10 October, the first day of the ninth lunar month, and ends tonight with one of its most important traditions — the ceremonial send-off of the Nine Emperor Gods.

For visitors who happen to be in Penang today, this is one of the most interesting nights to experience the festival.

For the past nine days, yellow flags have appeared around neighbourhoods, vegetarian food stalls have opened along busy roads, and devotees have visited temples across Penang to pray and observe their personal religious vows.

Tonight, the atmosphere changes again as temples prepare to bid farewell to the Nine Emperor Gods.

The Final Night of the Nine Emperor Gods Festival

The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is celebrated for nine days, from the first to the ninth day of the ninth lunar month.

Throughout the festival, many devotees follow a vegetarian diet. Some choose to observe it for one day, three days, seven days or the full nine days depending on their vow and family tradition.

That is why October is also a very interesting time to explore Penang food.

Temporary vegetarian stalls appear in many neighbourhoods, especially around temples, and yellow signs make them easy to recognise.

But on the final night, the focus moves from food and daily prayers to the return and sea send-off ceremony.

Tow Boo Kong Temple, Butterworth

One of the most popular places to experience tonight's celebration is Tow Boo Kong Temple on Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth.

The temple is one of the largest Nine Emperor Gods temples in Butterworth. It began as a small shrine on rented land in 1971, while the present temple was completed in 2000.

For the 2026 festival, the temple has confirmed that prayer messages written by devotees will be placed inside the ceremonial Emperor Boat.

On the night of the ninth lunar day, the boat will be taken out to sea as part of the ceremony to bid farewell to the Nine Emperor Gods.

The atmosphere around Jalan Raja Uda is expected to be especially lively tonight.

When the temple welcomed the Nine Emperor Gods at the beginning of this year's festival, more than a thousand devotees joined the procession from the temple towards the Bagan Ajam coastal area.

The temple also introduced a live tracking system this year so devotees could follow the location of the procession and floats. Organisers said the same system would also be used for the ceremonial send-off.

If you plan to visit, go earlier and allow extra time for traffic and crowds.

The temple's official 2026 information confirms that the sea send-off takes place tonight, although an exact public departure time has not been clearly announced. It is better to check the temple's latest update before heading there.

Hong Kong Street Tow Boh Keong and Yeoh Jetty

Visitors staying on Penang Island can also experience the tradition in George Town.

One of the historic temples connected with the festival is Hong Kong Street Tow Boh Keong.

Its connection with the Nine Emperor Gods Festival has been recognised as part of George Town's cultural heritage, and the temple has long played an important role in the annual celebration.

The final-night tradition is closely connected with Yeoh Jetty.

George Town World Heritage Incorporated records Yeoh Jetty as the traditional location used by Hong Kong Street Tow Boh Keong for the Nine Emperor Gods return ceremony. The usually quiet clan jetty becomes much busier during this annual festival.

For travellers, this is a very different way to experience George Town.

Instead of simply visiting the clan jetties during the daytime, you get to see how these old waterfront communities are still connected with living traditions.

What Will You See?

The final evening can include temple prayers, devotees dressed mainly in white, ceremonial floats, incense, drums and crowds following the procession towards the waterfront.

The sea is especially important to the Nine Emperor Gods tradition.

Just as the deities are welcomed from the water at the beginning of the festival, the celebration ends with devotees accompanying them back towards the sea.

It is a religious ceremony first, not a tourist performance.

Visitors are welcome to observe, but it is worth being respectful. Avoid blocking the procession, do not stand directly in front of people praying, and follow any instructions from temple volunteers.

Photography is normally part of the experience, but during religious rituals, it is always polite to look around first before taking close-up photos.

Why the Final Night Is Worth Seeing

Many visitors know Penang for George Town street art, Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si Temple, Chew Jetty and local food.

But festivals like this show another side of Penang.

The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is not something created specially for tourists. It is a tradition that local communities continue every year.

For nine days, neighbourhoods change.

Vegetarian stalls appear.

Yellow flags line the streets.

Temples become busier.

Families return to pray together.

And on the final night, thousands of people gather to send the Nine Emperor Gods back to sea.

That is what makes the experience memorable.

You are not just looking at an old building or reading about history.

You are seeing a tradition that is still very much alive.

Visiting Penang During the Nine Emperor Gods Festival

If you are visiting Penang during the festival period, it is easy to combine the celebration with other attractions.

On Penang Island, you can spend the daytime exploring George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, Armenian Street, Chew Jetty, Penang Hill or Kek Lok Si Temple, then experience the festival in the evening.

If you are travelling to Butterworth, you can include Tow Boo Kong Temple and Jalan Raja Uda in your itinerary before the evening celebrations begin.

Penang is not a place that needs to be rushed.

Sometimes the most memorable part of a trip is simply being here at the right time and discovering something you did not expect.

Tonight's Nine Emperor Gods sea send-off is one of those experiences.
