Things to Do in Penang in 3 Days – A Local 2026 Guide

Coming to Penang for 3 days and wondering how much you can actually see?

Three days is a good amount of time for a first visit. You can explore George Town, visit Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si Temple, enjoy Penang's famous food and still have time to see another side of the island.

The biggest mistake is trying to squeeze too many places into one day. Penang may look small on the map, but traffic and travelling between different parts of the island can take up a lot of your time.

Here is a simple 3-day Penang itinerary we normally recommend for first-time visitors.

Day 1 – George Town Heritage & Penang Food

Start your first day around George Town.

You can visit the Esplanade and Fort Cornwallis before continuing towards Little India, Street of Harmony, Armenian Street, Khoo Kongsi and the Clan Jetties.

Many of these places are relatively close to each other, so there is no need to rush. Take some time to walk around the old streets, look at the heritage buildings and stop whenever you find something interesting to eat.

George Town has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Melaka since 2008. You can learn more from the official UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

For lunch, try something local. Char koay teow, Penang laksa, Hokkien mee, nasi kandar and roti canai are just a few options.

That's usually a better first day than spending the whole day travelling from one end of Penang to another.

Day 2 – Kek Lok Si Temple & Penang Hill

Keep the second day around Air Itam.

Start with Kek Lok Si Temple, one of Penang's best-known temples, before heading to Penang Hill.

The two attractions are in the same general area, which makes the route much easier to arrange.

Penang Hill is especially nice when the weather is clear. Besides the views, the cooler surroundings make it a good break from the heat around George Town.

Before visiting, you can check the latest operating information and ticket details on the official Penang Hill website.

After coming down, you can stop around Air Itam for food before continuing with the rest of your day.

If you are travelling with children or older family members, don't pack too many additional stops into the schedule. A comfortable trip is usually more enjoyable than trying to tick every attraction off a list.

Day 3 – Batu Ferringhi, Teluk Bahang or Balik Pulau

For the last day, choose according to what you enjoy.

If you prefer the seaside, head towards Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang. There are beaches, resorts and several family attractions along this side of Penang.

If you prefer something quieter, consider Balik Pulau. The scenery is completely different from George Town, with villages, hills, local farms and a slower atmosphere.

For visitors with an evening flight, we can also arrange the day's route according to your flight time instead of making you travel back and forth unnecessarily.

Is 3 Days Enough for Penang?

Yes, especially for a first visit.

With three days, you can comfortably cover George Town, Air Itam and either the northern or western side of Penang.

What matters more is how the itinerary is arranged.

For example, visiting Batu Ferringhi in the morning, going all the way to another side of the island and then returning to Batu Ferringhi later is usually a waste of travelling time.

We normally suggest grouping nearby attractions together.

Getting Around Penang

If you are travelling alone or as a couple and don't mind planning your own route, public transport and e-hailing can work for many places.

For families and larger groups, a private vehicle can be more convenient. You don't need to arrange several cars, look for parking or repeatedly book transport between attractions. Your group also stays together throughout the trip.

Trolda Vacation Penang Private Tour & Transport provides private tours and private transport with driver for couples, families and groups.

For larger groups, our Penang Van Rental with Driver service includes private vans suitable for different passenger and luggage requirements.

Every group travels differently.

Some guests want to spend more time looking for Penang food. Some prefer temples and heritage sites. Families may want more child-friendly attractions, while other visitors simply want a comfortable sightseeing trip without rushing.
